For years we have tried to get more rights and freedoms for everyone in our country and we have done many marches led by organizations committed to change.
But there is one big thing all of us can do to help achieve victory. We can talk to our friends and family and ask them to support democracy.
#talkaboutdemocracy
The best person to get someone to support democracy is somebody who they know well and trust. Your words and actions can be more powerful than any other person in the country. You are already trusted and liked by your friends and family.
If everyone that supports democracy asked their friends and family to support our cause then we will quickly grow our support. Also these discussions are quick and easy to do compared to organizing marches and other events.
The people who don’t want change and want to keep the freedoms and wealth for their own families don’t want us to talk about democracy. Why do they want us to be silent? Because if we talk to each other they know that more people will join the struggle. They know the people will start to ask questions and begin to understand that they can have political power and rights too along with fellow emaswati. So they want us to suffer in silence and take our freedoms and money for themselves and their families.
When you are speaking to them, tell them why you personally support more human rights and Democracy. Tell them what benefits you think there will be if we have Democracy and why you think Democracy is better than what we have today.
Here are 5 benefits of Democracy we can have:
Step 1 -
Write down the names of 5 friends or family you can talk to about Democracy.
Step 2 -
Choose people from the list to talk with individually. It is better to talk with them individually than in a group.
Step 3 -
Talk to them and tell them why you want Democracy and why you think it will help everyone in the country.
Here are some ideas on what to say -
“We have had the monarchy for decades now but what has it got us? Has the monarchy helped us?”
“Why can the royal family have palaces, private jets, Rolls Royce cars and everything but we have nothing?”
“If democracy can succeed in places like Canada, UK and Botswana and other countries why can’t we try it here?”
“Surely life will not be perfect if we have democracy but it will improve a lot. We can decide for ourselves the major issues our country faces”
Step 4 -
Be patient. Let them have time to decide for themselves. But answer any questions they have.
